Most families in the area struggle to find consistent work. In 2001, Africa New Life Ministries first opened its operations in Kayonza. Kayonza is a small town 30 miles east of Kigali. In this community, most families live in small mud brick or concrete houses and struggle to find consistent work. Parents rely on subsistence farming to provide for their families.

Africa New Life runs a primary and a secondary school in Kayonza called New Life Christian Academy (NLCA) and New Life Christian High School (NLCHS) respectively. Over a third of the sponsored students in Kayonza attend these schools, while the remainder attend other schools throughout the community. A New Life Bible Church was planted in the area in 2006.
